What is Moroccan Argan Oil Good For?

A few years ago, argan oil was virtually unknown to people outside of Morocco. But in just a short while, the popularity of argan oil has skyrocketed.  This Moroccan oil possesses unique properties that have made it a new favourite of the health and skin care industries.  So what does argan oil do, and why has it suddenly become so popular?

A Traditional Moroccan Oil

Argan oil - Argan treeArgan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa) which grows almost exclusively in Morocco.  The tree once grew in abundance in northern Africa, however it is now considered an endangered species and the argan-growing region was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1998.  The tree is well suited to the barren lands of southwest Morocco as it has adapted to drought and soil erosion.

Berber peoples have been producing oil from argan trees for centuries.  The oil is used by them for cosmetic, medicinal, and culinary purposes.  The fruits of the argan tree are green and resemble large olives.  Inside the fruit there is a nut which contains kernels from which the oil can be extracted.

Traditionally the oil has been produced manually.  This is done by roasting the kernels and grinding them to a powder.  The powder is then mixed with water, forming a dough from which the oil can be extracted.  This is a laborious and time-consuming process, and it takes about 20 hours of work to produce one litre of the oil. Nowadays, most argan oil is produced with the help of mechanical presses, making the process quicker and more efficient.

Argan Oil and Women’s Cooperatives

Much of the Moroccan argan oil is produced by women’s co-operatives.  The first co-operative was set up by Zoubida Charrouf, a Professor in the Science Faculty of Mohamed V. University.  Charrouf was fascinated by the properties of the argan tree, and while researching it, she saw an opportunity to give help the communities of southwest Morocco:

Dr Charrouf felt the need, first to do field work, but also to give something back to the communities she had consulted in the course of her research. “There’s a debt to be paid,” she states, “there has to be a return to the disenfranchised of these regions who taught us about the argan’s benefits… That’s when I told myself that it made no sense that, at the end of the 20th century, this oil that has so many virtues – nutritional, cosmetic, therapeutic – can be as debased as it was. It’s not right that it’s still sold on the side of the road, in recycled, chipped bottles. It’s not right either that it’s still produced by grinding the nuts between rocks.” (source)

With the help of IDRC (International development research Centre), Charrouf set out to develop co-operatives where local women were could use modern extraction techniques to produce argan oil.  Not only do the co-operatives help the women earn an income, but they also motivate locals to protect and re-plant the endangered argan tree.

July Favourites Makeup Addictions:

This month I’ve really been enjoying:

  • Innisfree Long Wear Cushion– not too heavy, just the right amount of coverage I’m looking for (covering redness). It is fairly long wear, has a touch of shine control and is very convenient for touch ups.
  • Guerlain Maxi Lash Mascara– I have come to the end of my full sized tube and I’ve started on a deluxe sample I have. I really like the formula and would repurchase, but I can’t justify the price for something I replace every 3-6 months. I’ll be sad when it is gone.
  • TonyMoly Tangerine Whitening Hand Cream– I love this hand cream. I used so much hand cream in winter because my skin tends to be very dry, especially around my finger joints and elbows. This is super cute and I love the fragrance.
  • Ciate Chinchilla Nail Polish– I’m just loving this colour on my nails at the moment. I’ve done 5 manis with this colour in the last month. If I ever manage to finish the bottle (which may actually happen!) I will definitely repurchase
  • Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer– I’m just about finished the travel size. I like the matte feeling and I find it really helps with the longevity of my makeup. I will repurchase once I have worked through my other primers, or once it becomes summer again (It’s perfect in summer).
  • Argan Oil By SheerArgan -Argan oil works great for me with OCM. I wish it weren’t so expensive. I also mix a few drops in with my leave-in conditioner. Works great!

Also this Month, As a token of appreciation towards its new customers for all their love and trust, Sheerargan has now come out with a sizzling offer. For a limited time only, you can avail 10% off extra on Argan oil at Sheer Argan and also take advantage of Free Shipping across all orders.

[Reblogged] Reap The Advantages Of Natural Argan Oil

I just read an entire article on argan oil and I wish I read it sooner because argan oil is amazing. I’m actually going to do an entire write up on argan oil now because I never knew how great this oil was.

One notable effect is that it can inhibit melanin to help treat Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

Taken from the article “The antioxidant and reducing properties of argan oil provide additional benefit to the cells via the reduction of oxidative stress in the absence of melanin. Melanin has a free radical scavenging property in pigment cells. In conditions where melanin is decreased, such as in cells treated with argan oil or in melanocytes deprived of melanin such as in OCA2 cells, oxidative stress inhibitors may provide protection from oxidative damage”
