Skin Care Routine for Dry Skin

Last week, I received an email from a reader enquiring about dry skin care routine. here are the few lines from her message:

So I’ve been having a battle with my skin for a few years now and after a good 5 years battling cystic acne (which I now know was from using colorstay foundation) I can’t seem to beat my dry skin! I’m 24 and I have sensitive skin which is dry with a very flaky chin and slightly flaky nose and forehead. My routine right now is rinsing my face with warm water in the morning, I wear sunscreen every day too. I use the OCM method with just argan oil in the night time and then put either Vaseline, avene rich compensating cream or lush skin drink on. I also use an exfoliating wash 2-3 times a week and I purchased FAB radiance pads today too.

Here’s what I have suggested her:

I’d say skip the exfoliating wash. Physically exfoliating flaky skin tends to make it so much worse for me. It ends in a viscous cycle of scrubbing the flakes, things are good for a few hours and then even MORE flakes.

The FAB radiance pads seem to be ok and the AHAs will help exfoliate gently. However, some people say glycolic acid sorta burns, so I’d imagine it could sting a bit on the dry flaky parts. I’d suggest starting off slowly (1-2x a week) at first. And maybe even waiting until you get the really dry bits healed up before incorporating them into your routine.

At night, Use argan oil as SERUM before moisturizer after OCM and then put a thin layer of vaseline over that. It will help seal in moisturize over night and should help heal the really dry spots.

One thing I usually recommend is EltaMD intense moisturizer. It’s supposed to be a daytime friendly alternative to vaseline.
